Scene 3 –

 …. an ‘orrible bloody murder!
… Suddenly, almost as though everyone had been up and out of bed, the room was full of gaping mouthed spectators.

Monsieur Parrot stood gibbering and crying, “Mon Amis! Mon Amis! C’est Incroyable!”

Miss Marbles was wrapped in bundles of pink woollens, she was staring at the corpse and had a rosy flush to her cheeks. Her arm was around the shoulders of Vanessa Fisher who’s eyes could not have been any wider.

Doctor Whatsup and former Lieutenant MumboJumbo both arrived wearing almost identical blue striped pyjamas and quilted smoking jackets. “Oh, my Word!” Doctor Whatsup exclaimed.

“Nasty, just nasty” Mumbojumbo muttered.

Matron Pushover just arrived at that moment and instantly assessed the situation, judging Monsieur Parrot to be most in need of her matronly skills. As she put her comforting arm around the distraught former famous detective’s shoulders she announced her orders. “Come along everybody, go back to your rooms please and stay there. Nothing must be touched or disturbed, I shall phone the police once I have settled Monsieur Parrot down.”

She shooed everyone out like a mother hen herding her chicks away from danger.

They had barely had time to get a good look at the body, but the eyes of all those amateur and former professional detectives took everything in with great speed.

The body lay face down on the top of the covers and was still fully dressed in its dinner suit. What could be seen of the face was badly disfigured and covered in dark sticky blood. A hole in the back of the head, consistent with being a bullet wound, stood out prominently. The blood was smeared across the white pillow under the head. Beside the bed, the window had been smashed letting in the freezing cold night air, although the storm had blown out some time ago. Across the floor were strewn a number of apparently random objects, a pipe cleaner, a moustache comb, an empty ink cartridge, a small skein of pink wool and a foil band from an old cigar.

After they were all bustled out of the room, Matron locked the door, taking the key from the lock inside and then putting it into the pocket of her floral white nightgown.

She took Ercool Parrot back to his room next door and put a couple of drops of sedative that she always carried with her into a glass of water and made him drink it down.

The bottle was returned to her pocket, it was part of her armoury for dealing with the sometimes restive residents. She’d frequently had to use it whenever one of her charges had become agitated after losing a game of Cluedo. It had been a long time since she’d had to use it in similar circumstances.

Once Ercool Parrot had drifted off to sleep she walked downstairs and telephoned the police, as was her duty. She had to admit to having been quite excited by the whole thing.

“Is that the police? Please come quickly, to the Agatha Christie Home for former Sleuths. It looks like there has been a murder.”
Scene 4 –

A case for the infamous Inspector Kruseau!
Matron sank into a chair, feeling out of breath. It wasn’t long before she heard the sirens announcing the arrival of the local police, but each minute seemed like an eternity where her heart raced, and she relived the events of the evening. She wasn’t a woman given to fancies, but she had felt that something wicked was going to happen that evening, the fact that she had been proven right did not bring her any satisfaction. Pushing her dark thoughts to the back of her mind, she composed herself and opened the front door to a man in a dirty mac.

Inspector Kruseau introduced himself and in moments the house was swarming with police and the forensic team, taking photographs and dusting for fingerprints.

In her office, Matron sat and poured herself a glass of something medicinal which she drank far quicker than she would have had it been normal medicine.

A knock at the door announced the Inspector “Can I ask you some questions, Matron?”

“Yes, of course, inspector, please sit down.”

The inspector leaned forwards and over his steepled fingers gave her an intense stare.

“Please, in your own words, describe to me the events of the evening”

“Well, it all began really with the arrival of that man, Ercool Parrot. I remember thinking when he arrived, that he was bringing with him an ill wind. It was clear he did not want to be here. It was Captain Haslet and Miss Melon who had brought him and unfortunately, there was bad blood between them. I was a witness to a very nasty incident. They had argued and Monsieur Parrot had called Captain Haslet a traitor! For the rest of the evening, there was a terrible atmosphere. Apart from Miss Marbles, who seemed to be enjoying herself. The weather outside was atrocious and the mood inside was not much better. After dinner people began to retire up to bed. When I left to go to my room, only Mr. Snodgrass remained in the living room, drinking a cup of coffee. I said goodnight to him. I slept badly, the howling wind, kept me awake and I also had a sense of dread. I kept hearing noises on the stairs, like running, then I thought I heard a gunshot and the sound of breaking glass. I decided to get up and investigate. I had just dressed when I heard shouting coming from Captain Haslet’s room. When I arrived, everyone was in the bedroom and the Captain’s body was lying face down in the bed, shot through the head. Ercool Parrot was standing in a clear state of distress. I took him back to his room and gave him a sedative, told everyone to go back to their rooms, and then called the Police.”

“Do you have any idea who was responsible?”

“Well, as I told you, Monsieur Parrot and Captain Haslet had had a falling out. I can think of no one else who would want to wish him dead. It’s the Latin blood, even at his time of life, they can get a bit hot under the collar. That’s why I administered a sedative. I suppose you will be arresting him once he regains consciousness?”

“Oh, I don’t think it will be as straightforward as that I’m afraid.”

The Inspector got up and left the room. After he had gone, Matron poured herself some more of her special medicine.
