Today is dedicated to the following readers and fans alike who like me have a real love for this period of time! If you are also a fan and want to be included let me know below!
Who didn’t love the Eighties?? Even if you weren’t growing up in them like l was – the period has a huge following and do you know why? Because music from this time the 80’s like the 70’s, the 60’s and the 50’s is memorable. In the next twenty years songs from these eras will still be whistled, hummed and sung and yet very few will be from the 90’s and the arrival of the millenium.
The 80’s was a fantastic period of time for developing seriously strong female musicians, and quality song writing and for Indie labels, and musical television, and cultures and tribes alike! But heavy metal blossomed during this time – it came crashing out from the gravestones and not just yelling but screaming its name!
I am not saying the 50’s to the 70’s were no good, because they were equally awesome – but l was a teenager in the 80’s and it was my forming years. The 80’s really spelled out ‘raw musical energy’ and lasting names for those of us there at the time! The other aspect of the 80’s was the sheer eclectical diversity of the grooves! Anything you could think of was played during these years – which is why selecting over these two episodes today is going to be so very hard ……. 1980 – 1989 at a mere 40 songs – how do we do that?
I don’t know! I am bound to upset some of this genre and that genre – l should have picked this and or that! What on earth is THAT doing in this line up when you could have had this?
So all l can do is what l have done this morning and that is gone through roughly 50 assorted posts selecting the most popular songs from the 80’s that you – the readership have chosen as your favourites! Now if in this first 20 l don’t pick YOURS, let me know below and l’ll include it in the second episode later tonight!
There is no numerical order to these, no top five, ten, twenty or an ultimate number one – they are numbered purely so l don’t forget how many songs l have done per episode!

Which were your favourites? Were they there? Have l got the first 20 wrong? Let me know below what you would have selected for the 80’s 1980 – 1989 – 2#
You picked some real ‘goodens’ there, Rory. Two have particular resonance for me: my housemate used to play ‘Blue Monday’ first thing every morning for the whole of our last term at uni. His room was directly under mine and he kept the song on repeat until I made the coffee. ‘Everybody wants to Rule the World’ is the song that was on the radio all the time when my now husband and I first met. All so long ago, but let’s not dwell on that, let’s just enjoy the music 🙂 …and so, ‘Let’s Dance’!!

Ah Chris – Great memories indeed – l remember my college days with a fondness because of the music 🙂

“Making Thunderbirds” or “Horizontal Bop” would’ve been a better Dance song for Bob Seger, imo… I like his slower stuff anyway.
I like everything 80s! Gotta put Wham or George Michael in the 2nd half🙄 SOOOO 80s.
Okay, I’ll stop🤐🤣🤣 You already know all my faves😉🌊🦄💫🧸💌

Hey Grandma, maybe so ref Bob’s songs – however those two as an example were not commercially popular mainstream whereas the other one was principally because the film made it commercially huge 🙂
Yes good ol’ George 🙂

I love these! I was also an 80s teen! Loved Janet Jackson and all the above artist during this time! These are some great picks!
Some others I thought about were ones like Total Eclipse of the Heart, Never Give You Up, Take On Me, Livin’ On A Prayer, and Back in Black to name a few. 🙂
I just loved our music then!! Any time I do a live I have the 80s music playing in the background and everyone loves it!
Thank you for doing this, Rory! Its so great and takes us back to a great time.
