Grace and Frankie is an American comedy series created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris for Netflix. The series stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the title roles of Grace and Frankie, two unlikely friends who are brought together after their husbands announce that they are in love with each other and plan to get married. Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, Brooklyn Decker, Ethan Embry, June Diane Raphael, and Baron Vaughn co-star in supporting roles. It premiered on Netflix on May 8, 2015, with all 13 episodes of the first season released simultaneously. The second through sixth seasons, also consisting of 13 episodes each, were released on May 6, 2016, March 24, 2017, January 19, 2018, January 18, 2019, and January 15, 2020 respectively.

Grace and Frankie received mixed reviews upon its debut, but its second and subsequent seasons have been met with a largely positive reception from television critics. It has received several nominations, including five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

On September 4, 2019, the series was renewed for a seventh and final season, which will consist of 16 episodes, thus making it the longest-running Netflix original series with 94 episodes.

A couple of years back [January 2018], whilst flicking through the countless channels in Netflix looking for a new series to watch – which can be both damning and tiresome at the same time – Suze and l were just about to give up when we chanced upon Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin’s trailer for Grace and Frankie series 1. Well, we laughed so hard that we binge watched four seasons over five days whilst Suze was on holiday!

We then watched the fifth season on regular viewing and eagerly awaited the sixth season which we started watching tonight. The first series was ok, but every season that followed just got better and better! I can’t remember laughing so hard on a series for quite some time. Suze and l are big huge fans, how about you?

  1. I just love “Grace & Frankie” ❤️ I’m currently re-watching the first 5 seasons before I watch season 6. You’re right – it’s so funny, it’s an absolute joy to watch and Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda bounce off each other brilliantly. Thanks for highlighting one of my favourite shows, Rory 🙏👍

  2. Yes, love “Grace & Frankie” (I love anything that has my name on it) but I must admit that there were times when the Frankie character was just a little too flaky for my taste (pastry should be flaky – I like flaky pastry…not people!)

    1. But l guess that is the character of Frankie and yet having said that in all the interviews l have seen with her in as Lily Tomlin’ she is very similiar.

  3. I loved it for a few seasons but last season became tedious for me. I liked the small family dramas and the business problems. But then things just became so ridiculous (jumping the shark perhaps?)… I lost interest. Don’t know if I will watch the last season. I’m so busy anyway!

    1. Ha ha – strange for most of this morning l was trying to think of the episode where either one of them jumped the shark, Googled it in the end – never heard the phrase before 🙂
