Connection to Brat Pack Film by Association [Randy]
Following on from Theme Times – The Brat Packers!! Here is our 8th feature episode of’by association only’ Brat Packers.
Now, l would be more surprised if you had heard of these than by being surprised by you not knowing of them. Having said that Mare Winningham, was one of the original Brat Packers due to her appearance in St Elmo’s Fire. Of the four she would be l think the actress you know more of, but you may well be like me a film buff and therefore be all too aware of the careers of the other three. You might know them more from their visuals rather than their names alone.
Of the four, l am more familiar with Mare’s work over the other three. Below are their top four films. It is really hard to find great films as not all the Brat Packers even with association had the best of luck after their iconic hits in the 80’s, but you can see further associations. Some of which were purely made by dating a brat packer or appearing in another B movie with one.
1 – Turner & Hooch – 1989
Detective Turner leads an orderly life until it is disrupted by Hooch, a brutish dog that’s the sole witness to a murder. Hooch is not only set in his ways but also distressed over his owner’s murder.
2 – St. Elmo’s Fire – 1985
Seven close but self-centred friends in Georgetown struggle to deal with the transition from adolescence to adulthood and realise that life is not as easy as expected.
3 – Georgia – 1995
Georgia Flood (Mare Winningham) is a well-to-do folk-singer with a stable family and a loving husband. Her younger sister, Sadie (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is the lead singer in a rowdy punk-rock band. Living in Georgia’s shadow causes Sadie to become obsessed with her, and she tries everything she can to live up to her big sister’s achievements. Unfortunately it is this very obsession –coupled with her self-destructive tendencies and rampant drug abuse– that keep her spiraling down the drain.
1 – Miracle Mile – 1988
Musician Harry Washello (Anthony Edwards) sits down at a Los Angeles diner, where he instantly takes an interest in waitress Julie Peters (Mare Winningham). The feeling is mutual, too, so the pair arranges a date for later that day. But things go awry when Harry picks up a random pay phone call from a frantic soldier who warns of a nuclear attack that will hit L.A. within the hour. Scrambling, Harry finds Julie and the two do everything they can to escape to safety.
1 – The Lost Boys – 1987
Lucy along with her two sons, Michael and Sam moves to a small town in California. Soon, the two boys are sucked into the mysterious and dangerous world of bikers, vampires and vampire hunters.
2 – Less Than Zero – 1987
Clay (Andrew McCarthy) comes home to Los Angeles after his first semester of college and encounters some disturbing developments. His former lover, burgeoning model Blair (Jami Gertz), has begun to abuse cocaine. But her addiction pales in comparison to the drug dependency of her new boyfriend, Julian (Robert Downey Jr.), who’s also Clay’s childhood buddy. Clay tries to help them get sober, but the process is complicated by Rip (James Spader), a callous dealer Julian is indebted to.
3 – Twister – 1996
Ben, a storm chaser, and Jo, a meteorologist, have to put their impending divorce on hold to battle a series of violent tornadoes that are destroying Oklahoma.
4 – Jersey Girl – 1992

1 – Critters 2: The Main Course – 1988
A batch of unhatched critter eggs are mistaken for Easter eggs by the country-folk inhabitants of Grover’s Bend and soon the flesh-eating furballs from out of space are on a rampage again.
2 – Girlfriend from Hell – 1989
The devil turns a high-school wallflower (Liane Curtis) into a raven-haired vixen with claws and cleavage.
With Liane, it’s very hard to find her in anything of quality following 16 Candles.
So there we go folks, this was a tough one to do – trust me l am being serious, after Mare Winningham, it began to get tougher! I have a Brat Pack compendium and Liane and Michael despite being by association brat packers aren’t even mentioned. I think we can see why …… however, do you know any of these actors?
