Question Fun Directory

Welcome to The Daily Four!

Today’s Questions to the Readers are….

At which point of the day do you achieve the ‘Ah yes that hits the spot!’ With your hot drinks?

How honest  are you really?

What was the first ‘album/record’ you ever bought?

How well do you cope with noise?

…… first my own answers.

At which point of the day do you achieve the ‘Ah yes that hits the spot!’ With your hot drinks?

Today whilst out with Suze for our Friday morning coffee/brunch, l overheard a conversation between two ladies on the table a few down from us, discussing of all things ‘their routine for hot drinks in the morning’, which is what inspired this question.

Do you follow a regular ‘hot drink’ routine each and every day and if so at which point do you appreciate that first coffee/tea – is indeed the first the best or is it a couple further into the morning/day? It made me think about my daily routine and at which point did l feel ‘Aah yes! That hits the spot!”

For me, it’s never the first hot drink of the morning, which is a coffee – that tends to just stir the brain awake and l start functioning, but it is usually my third, which today was in the new coffee house cafe – we trialed this afternoon. It was that coffee that calmed me down as l was a little vexed l have to say with a number of different things, one of which is posed as a seperate question below. For Suze it is her first ‘real coffee’ of the day in comparison to the chicory coffees and that is mostly now at around the third cup pretty much like me [except l no longer drink the chicory coffee].

As to routine, not really, not me any how. I have a coffee first thing when l get up for the day, and it is drunk without really knowing what it is … the second and l am just starting to see we have started a new day. For Suze, as l have written before, she starts with a hot water, then her first chicory and the day goes from there. I drink coffee all day, whilst Suze starts drinking tea, herbal tea and hot water from midday till around 9pm.

How honest  are you really?

I am a very honest person, l am a very open person, sometimes to my detriment, but l have a hard core inner sense of honesty which is a known trait with many Aspergians. I don’t dislike liars, they are still people – but l have learned to be very wary of them – but l am not a good liar and so tend to not bother – even small white lies tend to land me in hot water so l just now tell the truth even if it is dreadfully painful at times to do so.

I can at times bend the truth if l think it is going to be better for someone’s feelings but many a time when people ask me to ‘be honest’, l am .. then you discover that even when people say be honest – they are quite often lying! They wanted a bent version of the truth and honesty and not the actual black and white honest truth because it is easier for them to hear a dishonest lie than an honest truth.

What was the first ‘album/record’ you ever bought?

Suze and l were having this discussion when l was preparing the Spookie Tooones for last night and l was going through a number of different songs and as one song finished ‘Gonna make you a star by David Essex – 1974 came up, and Suze declared ‘Oh that’s the first single l ever bought!” Her first album was  she thinks but not 100% sure ‘Pink Floyd’s Off The Wall – 1979’ – Another Brick in The Wall”.

I had to give mine some really hard thought, as l was into really wacky and bizarre music listening by around 14 years like Arabic Music, Classical, Movie Themes and so on, and so my first commercial Single record l think was when l was around 17/18 and that was “Ant Music’ by Adam and the Ants – 1980. My first album l am pretty sure was Genesis by Genesis 1983 with my favourite track Mama.

But that was US, how about you?

How well do you cope with noise?

One of my bug bears which l do know is part of my Autism is irregular noises – it used to be much broader than that – as in simply ‘NOISE!’ But as l have aged, l am able to handle more plain noise much easier, it is only irregular noise l still have some concerns with and mostly uncontrollable noise and by this l mean further noise l am unable to control or quiet down.

However l made a vow to try and tackle two big isses of mine this year – one was ‘noise management’ and ‘breaking away from rigidity and routines’ and try and adopt a more flexible approach, both of which are difficult for me, but l am doing pretty well. This one does baffle me quite a bit at times, l have had problems with noise since l was young, but could still attend raves which were noisy and packed with people – but l think l was able to cope more because l switched off into the music and just ignored the people.

Another problem l have/had/have is the issue of thinking people are staring at me, when l know damn well they are not – it’s called Scoptophobia [another common autistic/Aspergers trait] and l have had this for quite a few years, but l am breaking this one down also, so am quite pleased with my progress so far.

However, today in the new coffee shop was a real test as it was noisy, and not so much the diners but one of the management who l think must have been deaf judging by his complete lack of awareness as to just how much a noisy sod he actually was.

However l coped and my vexations were eased off with my ‘Ahh coffee of the day!’ But how about you? How good are you with noise?

  1. Nice post Rory 😀.

    1. As I no longer drink coffee or anything else hot in the morning normally I would have to say never but it use to be that first cup of coffee in the morning.

    2. I’m honest to a fault like you said Rory, many a times I’ve been told I’m to prash because of my honesty.

    3. I have no idea, I bout old albums and tapes at yard sales when I was a kid and into my teens.

    4. AWW I hat hat hat noise good thing I’m half deaf I don’t know how normal hearing people put up with it I want to put in ear plugs 90% of the time I can’t wait to get home most of the time just to get away from all the dame noise.

  2. I drink coffee all day! Its actually a rare cup that “hits the spot”. Usually it’s when I pay the ridiculous cost of a Starbucks “hammerhead” with 4 shots of espresso😯

Honest, honest, honest. My memory is too bad to keep track of lies, and really…why bother? I try to use nice, soft, kind honesty when it comes to people’s feelings.

My first record that I bought with my own birthday money was Shaun Cassidy’s first album. I was 9 or 10 and crushing madly!

all the noise, Noise, NOISE! I have turned into The Grinch! I cant handle noise like I used to. I’ll suffer in the heat rather than turn on a fan sometimes because of the noise the fan makes. Too many people talking at once sends me running, and I used to work in a call center with 100+ people talking on phones.😯
Like you, concerts are different. Maybe because I expect the noise and crowds or maybe it’s just because of the music.

    1. Hey Angie, great answers – yes l think musical noise is different to society noise – it’s delivered very specifically to hit exactly where we want it to be and because it’s a choice it’s easier 🙂
