Dedicated to Kristian – Tales of the mind of Kristian

Adam and the Ants were an English rock band active during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The group, which lasted from 1977 to 1982, existed in two incarnations, both fronted by Adam Ant. The first, founded in May 1977 and known simply as The Ants until November that year, achieved considerable cult popularity during the transition from the punk rock era to the post-punk and new wave era, and were noted for their high camp and overtly sexualised stage performances and songs. The final line-up of this first incarnation – Dave Barbarossa, Matthew Ashman and Leigh Gorman – left the band in January 1980 at the suggestion of then-de facto manager Malcolm McLaren, to form the instrumentalist personnel of the controversial Bow Wow Wow.

The second incarnation of Adam and the Ants featured guitarist Marco Pirroni and drummer-producer Chris Hughes, and was noted for its use of Burundi drums. It lasted from February 1980 to March 1982, and achieved major commercial success in the UK and abroad.

Adam and the Ants

I am not totally sure when l started to really tune into Adam and the Ants as a group, but as l was going through the tracks to make today’s post, l figured that the first song l heard was Deutscher Girls 1978   .. and that time, a year back in the UK from Australia, at the tail end of punk a genre l happened to like and my parents hated, and upon hearing that l decided to like it even more!!

The next time l heard Adam was in fact was the 1979 track of  Whip in my valise …

…. then nothing until … Friends [1980]  when he he and the Ants were starting to really dress the scene that would follow  … but then when this hit the charts [our number 1 below] l suddenly realised that Adam and the Ants were seriously going to make a huge impact as a group!

But how about you? I know l have dedicated this to Kristian, as he loved the Ants as much as l did, but were you a devout follower? If so, from when and when to and what were your favourite tracks?
