K9 Interviews

K9 Questionnaire

A] Personal Details

1] Your Name?

Chi Chi, ” I’m Chi Chi.  This is  Zeus.”

2] What do you call your 2-leggeds?

Zeus, “We have 3, “Alpha”, “Elle”, and “Boy”

3] What K9 Breed are you?

Chi Chi, “I’m a long hair Chihuahua”

Zeus, “I’m a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, however Chi Chi says I’m just a bird dog.”

Chi Chi, “You are . I’m the King, you’re a bird dog.”

4] How Old Are You?

Chi Chi, ” I’m almost 16 years and going strong.”

Zeus, “I’m not sure. The doctor says I have the teeth of a 15 year old, but I feel as energetic as a 10 year old. I’m just happy to be here.”

5] Do you live inside or outside and more importantly – do you run your household?

Zeus,” I’m in a house with my family.  I used to live outside before I met my family.  They rescued me from jail after I was caught trying to steal pizza from a restaurant. I rely on Alpha for everything. She’s the best.”

Chi Chi,” I’ve lived most of my life in the same house in the suburbs as my family, but now I spend more time living in an apartment in New York City and only come out to the country to visit. I love living in the city. I’m treated like the King that I am. I’m clearly the boss and could run everything myself, but I enjoy having human subjects.  I give them purpose.”

6] Where abouts in the world do you live?

1ws0bv

Chi Chi,”We are native New Yorkers, mostly raised on Long Island near the water.”

Zeus,”I go wherever my pack family goes, but I do like living near the water. There’s lots of birds, squirrels and raccoons to chase.”

B] Exercise/Play Time/Adventuring

IMG_4697

7] How often do you take your 2 leggeds for a walk?

Zeus,” I love walkies! I try to get my family out as much as possible. They even gave me a “Jack” to go walkies when they’re at work. I go walkies 2-3 times a day and sometimes I also run around the yard.”

Chi Chi,”I don’t require walkies. I go out to do my business and that’s it.  I’m too busy trotting about town and meeting new people to be worried about my human’s exercise habits.”

8] Do you do lots of adventuring when out and about?

Zeus,”Adventures are the best. We went to a waterfall that had all of these boulders that I got to climb, and stairs, and chipmunks, and people, and my family. AND I got to ride in the car which is my favorite. There was so much to smell and see and lick!”

Chi Chi,”I’m not a fan of adventure, but sometimes I must participate in family outings like the hike to the waterfall. I do have my human trained to carry me, but it’s usually very boring. I prefer a nice outdoor eatery, a park or even an occasional party where I can be pampered and adored.”

9] Do your 2 leggeds allow you to talk to other K9’s on your walks or do they huff and puff behind you and urge you to hurry along?

Chi Chi,”There are very few fellow K9’s that I can tolerate. I usually command them to clear the way for me. Sometimes my family encourages my superiority by lifting me up high above the others as we pass.”

Zeus,”There are so many friends in our neighborhood. I like to meet everyone. Alpha is very supportive of meeting new fur friends. Not everyone is as friendly as me so it’s a good thing Alpha is with me for protection.”

10] Are you allowed to do ‘stuff’ on your walks freely? Do you walk off or on lead?

Zeus,” I don’t mind the leash. I like staying next to my family. It can get really long when I want to run ahead or run around in circles. We went to a fenced in park where all of my fellow K9’s were running around off-leash, but I felt overwhelmed and stayed next to Alpha the entire time. I think I just like to know where Alpha is all the time and keep her by my side.”

Chi Chi,”I detest the leash, but I understand my humans are afraid of what I might do if someone annoys me in public. Honestly, if they just let me keep everyone in line, the world would be a better place.”

11] Have your 2 leggeds ever embarrassed you? If so how?

Chi Chi,” All The Time! If it’s not a ridiculous costume or clothing item, it’s a nickname. I was tolerant of the matching family Christmas pajamas, but lines were crossed when they proceeded to decorate me with elf ears and a Santa beard. Then they have some convoluted idea to post pictures of me with the ridiculous accessories on social media! I just resign myself around the holidays to tolerate family antics. In addition, there’s literally no end to the wordplay with my name–Chi-weasel, Cheesey Nugget, Chi Wee, Cheech, etc.”

Zeus,”Never! I love them so. I loved the matching family pajamas. It’s so nice to have a family to do these things with. And I have the best nicknames! My favorites are Zeupdaloop and Dr.Zeus. The Dr.Zeus is because my fur grows really long through my toes and when it needs a trim I look like one of those fantastic characters of a Dr. Seuss book. I think that’s pretty cool.”

12] Do your 2 leggeds expect you to fetch the ball/toy every time during soft/hard play?

Chi Chi,”I don’t do fetch. That’s a human job.”

Zeus,”I don’t really understand fetch, but I love tug-o-war.”

13] Do you have favourite toys and if so, what are they?

Chi Chi,” I do not have toys, but I do have a collection of stuffies that I like to keep close by and sleep with. No one else is allowed to touch them. Some of my favorites are Sock Monkey, Zoo Bat, and Snoopy.”

Zeus,”Yes, Chi Chi does not share. My family buys me stuffies too, but Chi Chi takes them. It makes me happy to get along with him so I just let him have them. The last one was a dinosaur. There’s one that’s more of a toy that I really like and Chi Chi ignores. It’s a raccoon and Alpha and I play tug-o-war with it. When I see it out I get really excited because I know it’s play time.”

14] Are you a very much loved K9?

Chi Chi,”Despite the costumes and nicknames, it is clear that I am not only the favorite, but very much adored by everyone.”

Zeus,”I feel very loved and I love them too. I love being part of a family. Before they rescued me I was alone and living on the street by myself. People would pet me and give me scraps of food, but it’s not the same. Now I am part of a family that is always there for me. I cannot wait for Alpha to come home and sit on the couch where I can lay next to her. It is the best warm and loving feeling.”

15] Do your 2 leggeds take you away on holidays with them?

Chi Chi, “I really don’t like it when the family disappears, especially if they give me subservient humans to look after. It is too much work training new humans. I like my routines and scheduled maintenance. I’m pretty sure that after the last fiasco there will be no more of that. They took a two week vacation from me and left me with idiots. Well, I refused to be reduced to a “pet” so I bit these morons and tried to leave for home. I did succeed a couple of times in getting back to my home, but I could not get inside and was therefore snatched and brought back to their unacceptable conditions. I was very vocal when my family returned. I believe they understood the gravitas of the situation and will not repeat it. I cannot stress enough to fellow K9’s  the importance of training your humans.”

Zeus, “I’m with Chi Chi.  I cannot bear to be away from Alpha. I remember that long stretch of time. I was so distraught. Our host family was very nice, but I did not like being there so long. I also escaped and searched for my family. I was so sad when they were not at our home. I tried to wait at the door, but like Chi Chi, I was taken back. I know Alpha will never do that again. She promised to take me with her on the next trip.”

C] Eating/Food/Treats

IMG_7980

16] Are you given treats? What are your favourites?

Both, “Cookies!”

Zeus, “Especially peanut butter.”

17] Are you fed a nutritional diet and is your food moist or dry or both or even the raw meat diet?

Chi Chi, “Zeus and I are both on prescription dog food diets. I’m not a fan, but it does keep me feeling my best. Sometimes I get bored with it so I encourage my family to get creative by refusing to eat. They are so concerned with my health, but it reinforces my importance to their lives. “

Zeus, “I like my prescription diet. I mean, it’s really expensive so it must be the best. I always eat it all.”

18] Are you allowed to sample your 2 leggeds food?

Chi Chi, “I prefer the term hand feeding. They often cannot resist my charm and hand feed me clementines and chicken.”

Zeus, “It hurts my stomach too much to eat anything but my special food.  I do not even care for it.”

D] Your Personal K9 Stuff

IMG_5714

19] Do you have a favourite piece of 2 legged clothing and if so, do they know?

Chi Chi, “I LOVE socks. I will take them worn or unworn in a bunch. There’s something about socks! They are like my stuffies. If I’m caught with them, they are taken away so I try to keep them close by when I find them.”

20] Do you deliberately play up at times, just to annoy or worry the 2 leggeds?

Zeus, “Lately I’ve been listening to Chi Chi and it works. Whenever I want a cookie, I go to the door to be let out.  All I have to do is run in and out and I get a cookie. It’s like magic.”

Chi Chi, “Whenever I feel like I need more attention I just lower my head and look dejected.  Works like a charm.”

21] Do you have a bed or a favourite sleeping place?

Zeus, “Sleeping on or as close to Alpha as I can get.”

Chi Chi, “Piles of laundry–clean or dirty, but clean is best. The humans always need their clothes so I like to control their access.”

22] Are you always with your 2-leggeds or do you sometimes need ‘Time out?’

Chi Chi, ” I need a lot of sleep to maintain my energy level and luxurious fur. I only like to go out when fully rested.”

Zeus, “I feel like I never need a time out from my family, but when they’re not home I’m passed out in my bed, so maybe I do.”

23] Do your 2 leggeds make you ‘dress up?’ If so, when or what for and do you enjoy it?

IMG_7182

Chi Chi, “I already answered this.  Move on.”

24] Are you photogenic or make them run after you to capture you on film?

Chi Chi, “I’m not fond of photos, but I do understand the need to capture my glory for posterity.”

Zeus, “My family loves taking photos and gets very excited when I sit still for them. I like the praise.”

25] Do you have a friendly vet?

Chi Chi, “After several visits to the local butcher, my family finally realised only a consummate professional could tend to my care. I enjoy my visits to my new doctor. They understand the level of care I require. There’s warm towels to clean my feet and dry me off on rainy day. One of the perks of living in NYC.”

Zeus, “My vet is friendly, but I don’t like to be alone there. I don’t trust them. I keep Alpha close to me at all times.”

26] What would be your pawfect day?

Zeus, “Everyday with my family is perfect as long as we are together.”

Chi Chi, “A perfect day begins with sleeping in, then a nice hand fed breakfast. If the weather is nice we go out to lunch at a sidewalk cafe and afterwards, a stroll through the park.  At the end of the day we retire to the home and watch a movie on the couch. Of course I would lounge on a comfy pillow or human lap for pampering.”

Finally, in your own words tell us something about both you and your 2 leggeds that the questions haven’t touched on or asked about – something unique …

We love both of our dogs, but it is very clear that they are not the same. We have faced many challenges with Chi Chi’s maniacal behavior in public. He is a very special K9. His intelligence far exceeds his size and form.  If he had been born a human, he clearly would rise to a position of leadership.  However, it may be better that he is limited to his tiny dog form because his leadership skills may prove to be too authoritarian. It often amazes us how terrifying his adorable, furry, seven pound self can be.  He clearly knows what he wants and won’t settle for less. He does not identify as a dog and would protest if he knew that was the only selection he is offered on documents and forms. We cannot imagine our family without his antics and do our best to support his originality.

Even Zeus understands his brother’s overbearing need for attention and selfishness by letting him have first dibs on food, water, treats, and the couch. In his own way, Zeus is just as original and special by always exemplifying compassion and patience for his brother. There have been several times when we would not have blamed Zeus for growling or biting Chi Chi in self defense, but he has never once tried. He simply holds Chi Chi down with his paw until his brother calms down. That’s a gift.

A Small Note

There are times when l worry about Dad! In the process of the two of us both pawing and writing up this lovely interview, we were both laughing out loud in places at the antics of Chi Chi [was almost tempted to say King Chi there] and Zeus, but during this time, the oven bell rang out and Dad loped off to see to my chicken!

Now l am sure many of you will know through my adventures and my 4 paws diary episodes that share this home with a pair of two legged nutters? But l am also sure that many of you know, [or DO NOW] that Dad has a remarkable tendency to talk to himself, not just the odd word, but full blow conversations and sometimes they’re three way conversations! Always one for a bit of role play is my Dad, l blame too many years living on his own as a hermit and playing that World of Warcraft game personally, but like Dad, l have digressed — anyhoo, he was in the kicthen talking about this interview with Chi Chi and Zeus!

No, not to me, to him, he was both Chi Chi and Zeus!! As you read through this interview there are extremely funny answers, that should make you chuckle! But Dad for some reason only known to Dad’s bubble found the small conversation at the start immensely funny! Where upon Chi Chi and Zeus are discussing both age and Bird dogs!

I was sitting here listening to it Chi Chi was suddenly furball, whilst Zeus and Bird dog was explaining to the furball the merits of being a bird dog over the virtues of simply being a furball!! Do you see NOW what l must put up with daily??? You are not alone Chi Chi!

The only good point about this is that Dad and l have been discussing the merits of verbalising these interviews and Dad would opt for awarding the voices to the interviewees and talking to himself! Any chance for doing that – my Dad will gladly take!

Nutter!!

My special thanks to Chi Chi and Zeu, Alpha, Elle and Boy for taking the time to pawticipate in my K9 Questionnaire and entertaining for starters Dad, but also my self, and l feel sure that our readers [l have readers too Dad!! Not Just you! – Therefore they are ‘ours’] will absolutely love the witty conversations between these two but also the absolutely lovely fooltnote by Alpha – l was so impressed by this l am thinking of making that a feature in the questionnaire itself – so thank you Alpha, thank you very much.

Chi Chi and zeus, you are both adorable and so understanding of each others needs ……. and places in society, life and home, it is extremely endearing – and to Alpha, yes it is it a gift, but it is indeed more than that it is a very special gift of what Dad always calls – love. But that’s the true beauty of love between K9rs and their 2 leggeds and vice versa.

Thank you all so much for making us laugh this afternoon!
