K9 Interviews 41 – Benji aka Joey McJoe

K9 Interviews

K9 Questionnaire

A] Personal Details

1] Your Name?

“My name is Benji, but sometimes my 2-legged calls me Joey McJoe.”

2] Your 2 Leggeds Names?

“Mimi and Abo. Abo is short for Abuelo (Spanish for Grandfather), because, really I am a granddog. (I will explain later.)”

3] What K9 Breed are you?

“I am a proud mutt, but the people from the shelter where I used to live told me that I am a mix of Border Collie and Basenji.”

4] How Old Are You?

“I am 12 years old.”

5] Do you run your household?

“Oh yeah, I am absolutely in charge of my household. Mimi tells me to watch the house every time she leaves. She sometimes tells me to make coffee for her while she is gone, but I don’t have the opposable thumbs necessary for that.”

6] Do you live inside or outside the house?

“Strictly inside.”

7] Where about in the world do you live?

“I live in Lititz, in Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA, about 50 miles west of Philadelphia.”

B] Exercise/Play Time/Adventuring

8] How often do you take your 2 leggeds for a walk?

“I take my 2 leggeds for a walk at least twice a day. I used to run with Mimi, but I can’t do that anymore.”

9] Do you vary the walks or trek the same route every day?

“We have a few favorite walks that we do. My absolute favorite one is a walk that ends with a “swim” in the stream near our house. We don’t do that when Abo is along, though. It’s our secret – Mimi’s and mine.”

10] Do your 2 leggeds allow you to talk to other K9’s on your walks or do they huff and puff behind you and urge you to hurry along?

“I am allowed to talk to any dog bigger than me. With smaller dogs, I bark and pretend to be fierce, but I really just want to play.”

11] Are you allowed to do ‘stuff’ on your walks freely?

“There is a leash law where we live, but sometimes, especially in the winter when no one is around, Mimi allows me off the leash for me to run and play. I go off the leash, of course when I “swim”. I put swim in quotes, because I call it swimming, but Mimi calls it “wading”.”

12] Have your 2 leggeds ever embarrassed you? If so how?

“The most embarrassing thing they do is to hold my leash tightly when small dogs are around. I bark and carry on, but I really wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

13] Do your 2 leggeds expect you to fetch the ball/toy every time during soft/hard play?

“Ha ha, BOL I have trained my 2 leggeds not to expect me to fetch!”

*    Do you have favourite toys and if so what are they?

“I love to chase sticks and old tennis balls, but when I get them, they are mine. I do not give them up easily.”

14] Are you loved every day?
Fussed over? Tickled? Cuddled? Played with? Made to feel special?

“Oh Yes to all of the above!”

15] Do your 2 leggeds take you away on holidays with them?

“When my 2 leggeds go on vacation, I also go on vacation. I stay either with my boy (I will explain who he is) or with my Aunt Diana.”

C] Eating/Food/Treats

17] Are you given treats? Too few or just right? What are your favourites?

“I am given many, many treats. Some of my favorites are cheese, toast, chicken and egg yolks. I usually share an egg with Mimi – she eats the whites, which is the only part of the egg she likes, and I eat the yolks.”

18] Are you fed a nutritional diet?

“Mm,unfortunately, yes, although I sometimes get a quick squirt of whipped cream.”

19] Is your food moist or dry or both or even the raw meat diet?

My dog food is dry, but it is supplemented with a lot of people food.”

20] Do you enjoy it or is it boring?

“Truth be known it is boring. I will eat it only as a last resort.”

21] Do you eat it every day, or sometimes refuse to?

“I sometimes refuse to eat it.”

22] Are you allowed to sample your 2 leggeds food?

“Yep – it makes up at least half of my diet.”

23] Do you eat your food when you are expected to, or when you wish to?

“Whenever I wish. There is always a bowl of dog food available for me. Mimi usually remembers to bring me a doggie bag whenever she eats at a restaurant. This morning, she brought me eggs fried with potatoes, onions, and cheese. Yum!, nom nom!”

D] Your Personal K9 Stuff

24] Do you have a favourite piece of 2 legged clothing and if so, do they know?

“I pretty much ignore all 2 legged possessions, including shoes and clothes.”

26] Do you deliberately play up at times, just to annoy or worry the 2 leggeds?

“When the grandchildren come, I get so excited, that I run around and bark. A lot. This gets the grandchildren’s attention, but sometimes Mimi gets annoyed.”

27] Do you have a bed?

“My bed is a big cushion from our old couch. I loved to sleep on that couch, so when Mimi and Abo got new furniture, they saved a cushion from the old couch for me to sleep on.”

28] If so, do you sleep in your bed, or their bed, or the couch or all three and more?

“I usually sleep on my cushion, but sometimes on the new couch.”

29] How much alone time or ‘just you’ time do you have?

“I used to have a lot of alone time when Mimi worked full time. Now that Mimi is home most of the time, I have much less alone time.”

30] Do your 2 leggeds make you dress up or pose for pictures?

“Absolutely not! That would be beneath my dignity! And as for pictures only under extreme duress!!”

31] Do you actually enjoy it or simply tolerate it because it appears to please them?

“No way,I do not enjoy it at all. I wiggle around and avoid the camera to try to dissuade pictures.”

32] Do you have a friendly vet?

“My vet is very friendly. She gives me treats every time I visit.”

33] What would be your perfect day?

“My perfect day would include 2 walks, at least one of which end in a swim. Mimi would have eggs for breakfast so that I would have 1, maybe 2 egg yolks. She would also be cooking chicken that day, and would give me lots of tastes. The grandchildren would visit, and we would play outside in the yard for hours. They would find lots of sticks for me to chase and not expect me to give any of the sticks back. We would all eat dinner outside on the deck, and the grandchildren would drop lots of food for me to find. The dinner with some dessert involving whipped cream, which I would be allowed to taste. I would then sleep soundly on my favorite cushion and dream of chasing bunnies.”

In spite of everything … the manipulations and the training you must subject them to  – are they happy  that you are there to mentor for them?

“I am very happy that I am here to keep an eye on my 2 leggeds. What would they do without me? Who would Mimi talk to all day?”

Finally, in your own words tell us something about both you and your 2 leggeds that the questions haven’t touched on or asked about – something unique …

“Here is a brief story of my life. When I was a puppy, I lived with a  family that was not suitable at all. I don’t remember much about it, but I know I am still afraid of belts. When Abo takes off his belt, I sometimes cringe, even though he loves me, and would never hit me. That family took me to the shelter when I was 9 months old (thank goodness!).

“Before too long, my boy adopted me and took me home with him. He was a young boy in his twenties. He loved me and talked to me all the time. He lived in an apartment, first with his older brother and a friend, then by himself. We went for long walks late at night after my boy got home from work.

“Then the trouble started. My boy got a girlfriend. Before too long, they had moved to another apartment and were living together. They even got married! He started paying much less attention to me. Sometimes I would go to stay with my boy’s parents Mimi and Abo. They spoiled me, because I am their granddog. Then my boy’s wife got pregnant.

“When my boy and his wife went in to the hospital to have the baby, Mimi and Abo said they would keep me while my boy and his wife were in the hospital. I never went back to my boy’s house. That was 7 years ago.

“Even though I love my boy and go to visit him when Mimi and Abo travel, I like living with Mimi and Abo more. They have more time for me and tend to spoil me.

“That’s my life so far!”

Scrappy’s Thanks

My special thanks to Benji aka Joey McJoe, Mimi and a Abo for pawticipating in our K9 questionnaire –and sharing life from the inside with your grandparents/parents. You made me laugh with some of your answers, as l could relate to them all too well. I also have a problem with smaller dogs and yet big dogs are sometimes scared of me – before Dad l never knew what socialising was, so most dogs don’t know where they stand with me. Plus haha oh yes, the amount of times l simply look at my food and simply say NO, is astonishing. My parents are starting to become better trained now … taken them long enough!

Way to go Benji, Power to the Bark!

Hope you enjoyed reading … Tootle Pip from Doodlepip!

“If you are interested in pawticipaing please email me at doodlepip03@gmail.com and l will email you back with the questionnaire. I post your finished interview here and in Facebook and Twitter.

Also l have now introduced a new series called K9 Product Review Interviews in case some of you might like to tell us about something that you do – be this crafty hobbys or past times and activities or even a business for we K9rs and Feline Katz.

Dad and l are currently in discussions about vocalising these interviews in the future, so that is something l am quite keen to explore further.

Now l know that many of you must have K9’s equally as much as Feline Katz [4] – isn’t it time you let them have their say and take our number to 42!

Is 42 You?

Looking pawards to hearing from many, many more!
