Poesy plus Polemics – Truly Inspired #8

The Truly Inspired Series

1] Blog Name

Poesy plus Polemics

2] Genre

Poetry and occasional cultural commentary

3] Blog Age

5 years

3] At what age did you start to write and what was your motivation for doing so

After retirement 14 years ago – to keep the mind occupied at first – and then I became driven to get down on paper all the thoughts and ideas that I found constantly hatching there

4] Does writing/creativity come naturally to you or do you struggle to invent something inspirational each day/week/month?

It came surprisingly naturally – although it has slowed some with the years

5] How prolific are you in your craft?

I make it a point to write at least several hours per day – have produced over 4,000 blog posts

6] Are your writings displayed elsewhere or just WordPress? If so where?

I have published 23 books of poetry to date – 17 full-length volumes and 5 chapbooks

7] Do you ever suffer from writers/creators block? How do you combat it?

Indeed – I step away from writing and immerse myself in reading until the flash reignites

8] What is your preferred creative form?

Poetry – primarily free verse and Japanese short forms such as haiku

9] How do you arrive at your decision to write/create/invent about what you have chosen as a subject for the piece/s?

Every poem is invariably triggered by a word or phrase that comes to mind – sometimes in dreams

10] Do you need an ambience to work with, such as music, quiet, scented candles, yoga, exercise, reading, film or something else?

I live amid a forest in rural New Hampshire – I write in only one place surrounded by windows – chiefly in the mornings – the serenity of the scenery is what I need and use to be productive

11] What helps you to create your content?

[People/conversation/family/health/magazines/newspapers/controversy/funny moments/life experiences]

I’d have to say reading, more than anything else

12] Is your content driven by your journey or your story, or by the journeys and stories of others?

All my poems are very personal expressions

13] Are there any specific things which enable your creative juices to flow more steadily?

[Overtired/insomnia/mental health/eating/drinking/smoking/surrounded by colour/abstract thoughts and thinking]

I am fairly cerebral – thinking and imagining would be my best answer

14] How long from start to finish would/can your content take you to complete?

Anywhere from minutes to months – but typically a poem comes to fruition after a few days of development and rewrite – even the very short ones

15] Are you pleased with your finished pieces? How do you feel when you receive acknowledgement from another?

When I’m pleased, I post it in my blog and/or a draft manuscript for a book – when not, I save it for future consideration in a file I review at least once every few weeks – some eventually get a whole new rewrite and resurrection – some never see the light of day – we all like praise and I make it a point to sincerely thank all who take the time to comment on my work – a number of valued friendships have been one result

Finally, what advice would you award writers or creators looking to express themselves and to then display their works to the world?

Always write the truth as you feel it, understand it or believe it – Write to please yourself, not others – Not sure this applies to everyone, but I refuse to interpret my poems when someone asks me what I meant – I believe the most sublime characteristic of poetry is that it means whatever the READER thinks it means – I can’t think of a better way to share with the world than an internet blog – In 5 years I’ve attracted 15,000 followers from more than 150 countries – poets just can’t achieve that with paperback books alone

My thanks to Paul for sharing these wonderful insights into his own ‘inspiration’.
