The world will never understand depression because it doesn’t want to understand the depth of sadness the mind can create for its host! The world doesn’t want to hear of depression because mental health of any type is a taboo subject for its society.

When people dont know exactly what depression is, they can be judgmental.

  1. The problem (like there’s just one right?…) with mental illness it that the symptoms vary from person to person and no one can really fully comprehend what someone else is going through because each person is going through it slightly differently. It is also difficult to know what the best thing to do or say is, because what helps one person makes another person feel worse.
A bit of sympathy and empathy is always nice though.

I don’t really know what the point of me saying this was now. Sometimes stating the obvious is a fault of mine.

  2. Don’t be silly Kristian, you are right. The fact is that you said something already displaying your empthy to the situation.

Every person’s mental health is different to the next person as a matter of course. The point you made is addressing the situation – not a lost cause at all 🙂

Societies biggest problem, is that they don’t wish to address it in any format and so choose to either ostracise those suffering or judge those suffering.

  3. Having the depression monkey on my back off and on since my teens, I can say, for me anyway, the biggest help others can give it time and love. If you don’t know what to say, you can’t go wrong with “Is there anything I can do to help?”
I hate the mental health stigma. Mental health is just as important as physical health. People aren’t chided and told to buck up, get over it with a broken leg or diabetes.

  4. Exactly and well said – because it’s hidden – people think it’s something you are going through.
