33] What would be your perfect day?
“Okay, well l have perfect days where l get to take a walk around the lake and sit in the grass in the sun puddles. I walk to my friends’ house and play with her, then walk back home. Grilled chicken for dinner and a little milk before bed. Totally pawfect!
In spite of everything … the manipulations and the training you must subject them to – are they happy that you are there to mentor for them?
“Yes, yes and more yes, very happy. I was aggressive, l lived in a kennel my whole life and l never knew toys, or playing, or being a pet. I didn’t know love or affection or feeling wanted. Now because of the love from Carla and Bryan, l am a very different dog, we are family.”
Finally, in your own words tell us something about both you and your 2 leggeds that the questions haven’t touched on or asked about – something unique …
“Okay, sure … l was seen online at an LA County shelter and the fight for me began. My pet parents had to call 13 rescue groups in 2 different counties to try and adopt me from the shelter. I was deemed too aggressive to go to an individual and needed a rescue group to rehabilitate me. At the same time LA County had just passed a new law that stated all ”aggressive” dogs would be euthanised instead of being rescued. My Pet Parent had very little time! After speaking with Sherrifs at the shelter, they finally agreed to do a temperment test on me.
I barely passed with a ‘C’. I couldn’t walk with a leash, play with toys, eat my food, be picked up or be a pet. BUT l didn’t bite, so my parents were able to adopt me.
They came the very next morning, and it was difficult for the shelter staff to get me to them. But once l was held by them, l was very sleepy. I fell asleep almost the entire car ride home, except for waking for a quick nip to my Mom’s fingers.
I really didn’t know what to do with all the space at home, there was just soooo much space! I was running around in circles and crying. However, they knew to give me a smaller safe space and used an open large kennel to make me comfortable.
After a while, l finally came out on my own, and the space didn’t seem so big. I started to trust and l was taught how to walk on a leash, what toys were, where to poopy and how to walk on stairs.
I am very happy now.
Have l said l love milk yet? Ooooh l do so love milk! Every time l hear the word ‘milk”, l lick my lips … nom nom milk, milk, milk! i expect my milk every night.”
My genuine and sincere thanks to Tweakers aka Tweak, Carla and Bryan for sharing their remarkable and lovely story with us and taking pawt in our K9 interviews. I am so very pleased that Tweak is now in such a loving and caring family home, and now life can be so much better than it ever was before Mom Carla and Dad Bryan came into your life. In many ways l think you probably rescued each other.
