The Truly Inspired Series

1] Blog Name

Neurodivergent Rebel

2] Genre

Autism and neurodiversity positivity

3] Blog Age

My blog turned 1 on October 3rd 2017 – although I did not publish my first blog until November 24th – because I had NO IDEA what I wanted to say.

3] At what age did you start to write and what was your motivation for doing so?

I’ve been reading since I was 2, but didn’t start to love writing until I started typing on the computer in middle school. I must have been about 12 or 13. Its relaxing, hammering away at a keyboard. I love the clicks and sensations as words land on the screen. It’s magical.

4] Does writing/creativity come naturally to you or do you struggle to invent something inspirational each day/week/month?

Writing is natural to me when I don’t feel rushed. If time is tight I make videos. Normally I can easily do at least one video a week, sometimes more. Every now and then I get a little bit ahead and that’s nice.

5] How prolific are you in your craft?

I’m not sure. I try to do things I love and tend to be good at the things that I put lots of time and effort into. It is more about hard work doing the things you love.

6] Are your writings displayed elsewhere or just WordPress? If so where?

I’ve not worked to get published anywhere else. A few blogs have shared my content. I DO have a YouTube channel

7] Do you ever suffer from writers/creators block? How do you combat it?

When I get too busy with “less fun” things and get tired or worn down I become less creative and stop writing. I love writing and would love to write a book someday.

8] What is your preferred creative form?

[writing/photography/poetry/artistry/illustration/design]

I really love all of it. I wasn’t very athletic growing up and spent a LOT of time indoors working on creative projects. I know how to do use a DSLR camera on manual, I know Photoshop, how to shoot & edit videos. I also LOVE to write and create digital art. These are the things I do for ‘down time”.

9] How do you arrive at your decision to write/create/invent about what you have chosen as a subject for the piece/s?

I wanted a place to write about my passions, the things I love, and whatever popped into my head. Creating my own website gave me that freedom.

10] Do you need an ambience to work with, such as music, quiet, scented candles, yoga, exercise, reading, film or something else?

I need quiet OR I can put on headphones with music while I write. I NEED to be alone in a quiet house to shoot a video.

11] What helps you to create your content?

[People/conversation/family/health/magazines/newspapers/controversy/funny moments/life experiences]

I read a lot, and study topics that catch my interest. I’m good at sticking to a routine. If I commit to one video a week I take the time to come up with a topic even if it’s a simple one.

12] Is your content driven by your journey or your story, or by the journeys and stories of others?

My content is generally whatever pops into my head. Sometimes people will request topics or people’s comments or questions will inspire something.

13] Are there any specific things which enable your creative juices to flow more steadily?

[overtired/insomnia/mental health/eating/drinking/smoking/surrounded by colour/abstract thoughts and thinking]

If I’m comfortable & well rested, it is easy for me to be creative. I can NOT feel rushed. Art can’t be rushed.

14] How long from start to finish would/can your content take you to complete?

I can knock a video out in under an hour most of the time. A nice written piece can take a few hours. I spend hours every day managing my blog’s social media accounts.

15] Are you pleased with your finished pieces? How do you feel when you receive acknowledgement from another?

I’m happy if they make sense and flow well. I never know if people will like what I write. I’m often surprised at how well certain things are received. I like to write things that are helpful so if my writing helps people it is always q plus.

Finally, what advice would you award writers or creators looking to express themselves and to then display their works to the world?

Be consistent and realistic with your commitments. If I had all the time in the world I’d write one piece a week and publish one video a week. Committing to JUST at least one video a week was more realistic and manageable. Get on a schedule.

Readers like reliable content. Also – ask questions to get your readers talking. A writer is nothing without their readers.

Always have gratitude for your followers.
